President Gabon mutiny attempted to cure illness overseas

A mutiny occurred in Liberville, Gabon, the capital of Central Africa, on the morning of the 7th.

A group of soldiers occupied the radio station, issued an announcement to the public, questioned President Ali Bongo’s ability to continue in office and encouraged young people in the army and civilians to join the uprising.

  Reuters reported from a source close to the Gabonese government that gunfire sounded near the national television in the center of the capital before and after the announcement, but the attackers appeared to be only a handful of soldiers.

Reuters quoted witnesses as saying that soldiers loyal to the government fired tear gas to disperse some 300 support coups gathered outside the radio. Helicopters hovered over the atmosphere in most parts of the capital.

  A few hours later, the Gabonese government, known as Guibert Longmapangu, told AFP reporters that four of the five soldiers who had initiated the mutiny were arrested and one was at large.

Gabon is rich in natural resources, with oil, manganese, uranium and timber extraction and export as the main source of fiscal revenue.

Gabon has a forest coverage rate of more than 80%, a large variety of trees, the third largest log reserve in Africa, and a reputation as a country of green and gold.

  Bongo was formerly Minister of Defense, and his father, Omar Bongo, became president of Gabon from November 1967 until his death in 2009.

In September of the same year, Bongo was elected as the new president as a candidate for the ruling party and won re-election in 2016.

The opposition disputed the fairness of the election at the time, and violent clashes between demonstrators and police in Libreville set fire to the National Assembly building.

  The African Union Commission Chairman Musafaki Mohammed said on social media on Twitter on the 7th: The African Union strongly condemns the attempted coup in Gabon this morning.
